The BCRC of Austin provides a caring network of breast cancer survivors to answer questions and provide support. Below are some of the services we offer.

 

  •     Helpline: Answered by staff members during the day and trained volunteers in the evenings and weekends, the helpline answers questions and provides immediate support. Call (512) 544-0900.  

 

  •      Navigating Breast Cancer Together: A weekly orientation for partners to clarify diagnosis and treatment options, provide support, get information about available resources, and give partners an organizational framework so that they can approach this period of diagnosis, treatment and recovery as a cohesive team.  Partners who have gone through this experience as well as an oncology nurse facilitate.   •     Library: The BCRC information system includes three lending libraries containing over 1,100 books, videos and abstracts of research papers and studies.  There is a special Children's Resource Collection to assist parents in explaining breast cancer to their children. For more information contact Ray Anne Evans at (512) 544-0904, rayanne@bcrc.org.

 

  •    Peer-to-Peer Support: Peer support volunteers matched to clients for a variety of factors, peer volunteers share their experiences with particular treatment options and offer support and helpful information.   •      Support Groups: The BCRC offers two basic kinds of support groups, pre-registered and open. The two pre-registered groups (for recently diagnosed and for long-term survivors in ongoing treatment) meet for eight consecutive weeks. The open groups meet continuously.   •     Medically Underserved: A multicultural, bilingual, multiracial team of staff and volunteers works with the women being treated in the breast clinic of the Shivers Cancer Center at Brackenridge Hospital. This team assists patients by providing emotional support and by aiding with the practical matters of filling out forms and formulating questions for the physicians. Komen For The Cure Austin Affiliate.

 

  •      Physical Recovery: Information and videos on post-surgical recovery and regaining a daily fitness routine. Most of our staff members are survivors and practice various types of exercise such as NIA dance, gym-work, yoga, bicycling, swimming, and Team Survivor training.  They can talk with you about their experiences. We also offer a creative movement class for women with the focus on your body and your rhythm. It meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at 6:00 pm at the Yoga/Aerobics Room at Park St. David's. Each class is $6.00. Please RSVP to Lois Myers at lojo@ybyr.net.
