St. Andrew’s “Blue Cru” Turns Pink in October for
Breast Cancer Resource Centers of Texas
Fall is a busy season for St. Andrew’s Crusader athletics with football, cross country, volleyball and field hockey teams enjoying support from the school’s royal blue t-shirt-clad “Blue Cru.” But as Breast Cancer Awareness month approached, the girls’ volleyball team was also searching for a way to support the mothers of two team members who were fighting a much tougher battle off the court: breast cancer. The girls’ idea to hold a “pink out” and fundraise for breast cancer during October athletic events went to the St Andrew’s Athletic Council and the Council expanded on the idea. The Council decided that in addition to promoting the wearing of pink by athletes and fans, the students could facilitate that by selling a pink Blue Cru shirt with a pink ribbon design and the school motto “One Team One Family” during the month of October at all Fall athletic events. Students and parents sold t-shirts at athletic events throughout the month and raised over $5000.
The Athletic Council considered various breast cancer related charities to be the recipient of the funds raised, and settled on the Breast Cancer Resource Centers of Texas, principally due to the organization’s grass roots, peer-based support of local families fighting breast cancer. “The idea to raise funds started with the girls’ desire to do something to support their own mothers who were fighting breast cancer, and having the money go to support those in our own local community seemed consistent with our “One Team One Family” motto, says Laura Longoria, Athletic Director at St Andrew’s. This is just one more example of how St. Andrew’s students philanthropic efforts span the globe by contributing to charities and providing service to local, national and global communities.
