Mamma Jamma Kick Off Party

by Runi Limary on May 19th, 2011

Mark your calendars, invite your friends, and join us for the third annual Texas Mamma Jamma Ride Kick-off Party on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at GSD&M Idea City 6-8 pm. As the largest ride for breast cancer in the country, the Mamma Jamma Ride is geared for everyone, with a perfect distance for you. Along with 10 other local agencies, BCRC greatly benefits from your support of the Ride – whether it’s as a rider on Team BCRC, volunteer, or generous donor. Doing this Ride on October 1 is a great opportunity to help our cause. Come to the party, meet others who have done the Ride in past year, and discover why they’re back! All proceeds of the Ride stay local because What’s Raised Here, Stays Here!

Madame Scorpio takes sting out of breast cancer

by Runi Limary on October 7th, 2010

I became intrigued with Madame Scorpio when I started researching local bands playing South by Southwest last March. She explained on her band Scorpio Rising’s website that she had breast cancer.

I couldn’t do a story with her then, so I jumped at the chance to profile the Madame when October came around for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

After a series of e-mails, I met Madame Scorpio at a show. Scorpio Rising was performing at a fundraiser for Scare for the Cure, a nonprofit haunted house raising money for the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Texas. Having made it to the venue just in time to shoot video, I introduced myself to the most darling woman donned in a purple jumpsuit.

Emotional Toll of Breast Cancer on Well-Educated Women and Those Who Live Alone

by Runi Limary on November 4th, 2009

Well-educated women and those who live alone are emotionally the hardest hit by breast cancer, according to the findings of a new Australian study.

The MBF Foundation Health and Wellbeing after Breast Cancer Study, undertaken by Monash University Medical School’s Women’s Health Program in Australia, found that older women tended to experience lower levels of overall wellbeing compared to women of similar age in the community two years after their diagnosis.

“Up until now, there has been uncertainty about exactly what the impact of being diagnosed with breast cancer is in terms of mood and wellbeing over time. In our study, we found that two years post diagnosis women with breast cancer were not more likely to be depressed but were more likely to experience a lowered sense of control over their life, and lower general health, with lessened vitality being limited to older women,” explains Dr. Susan R Davis, Professor of Women’s Health, Monash University Medical School, who was involved in the study.
